Fort McAlister is near Richmond Hill. Fort McAlister is one of Coastal Georgia’s historical treasures, particularly for War Between the States (Civil War) buffs. The fort is located south of Savannah on the Ogeechee River bank. The fort now includes a scenic park that features the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the entire Confederacy. That is quite a treasure, and so convenient to tour for Coastal Georgia senior citizens. The Fort McAlister earthworks were attacked seven times by Union ironclads.

The defenders were able to keep the North at bay until 1864. This battle was the final piece of Union General William T. Sherman’s “March to the Sea.” Coastal Empire senior citizens and their families (this is a wonderful place to bring your grandchildren) can explore the grounds with cannons, a furnace, bombproof room, barracks, and palisades.

There is even a Civil War museum that contains artifacts, a video, and a gift shop. Tucked into giant live oaks, Spanish moss, and coastal marsh, Fort McAlister park is a beautiful location for camping, fishing, boating and scenic picnics. Three cottages perch on stilts near the marsh, surrounded by palm trees and palmettos.

The shade filled campground is bordered by:

  • Tidal Redbird Creek
  • A public boat ramp
  • Fishing dock
  • Nature trail.
  • A large picnic area offers river views and playgrounds
  • A second boat ramp provides access to the Ogeechee River.
