Savannah Senior News
Many Coastal Georgia Seniors are blessed each year by the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program.
Christmas is a wonderful time across Coastal Georgia. Homes and businesses are decorated, people are on their best behavior, and people exchange gifts with loved ones to remind them they’re special and appreciated. For many Coastal Georgia Seniors, there is no one to give them presents.
This season, holiday shoppers in the Savannah area can share the Christmas spirit with Coastal Empire seniors by participating in the Savannah Be a Santa to a Senior® program. The “Be a Santa to a Senior” program in Savannah is coordianted by Home Instead Senior Care® office in partnership with area retailers, volunteers and members of the community. The “Be a Santa to a Senior” Savannah program helps make sure Savannah area seniors receive gifts and companionship during the Christmas season. The holiday season can be a difficult time for many Coastal Georgia seniors, especially those who live alone or have lost spouses and loved ones.
An estimated 27 percent of people 65 and older (10.8 million people) are widowed, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Further, the Administration on Aging reports about 28 percent (11.8 million) non-institutionalized people 65 and older live alone.
