Introduction to Hilton Head Senior Men’s Golf Association

We’ve discovered that lots of our Savannah seniors are big golfers and golf fans.

Golf is a wonderful sport that Coastal Georgia Seniors can play for a lifetime.

Hilton Head is certainly one of our premier local golf opportunities.

Many Coastal Empire Senior men are drawn to the Hilton Head Senior Men’s Golf Association.

Their season provides ample opportunities to enjoy friendly and competitive golf with other Coastal Georgia seniors.

DESCRIPTION OF SMGA EVENTS

1. 2-MAN TEAM STROKE PLAY

Definition: A format in which a two man team matches the total net score of their two balls against the two balls of the other teams in their flight. Handicap: 100%

Pairings: Select your own partner. Team partner handicaps cannot be more than ten strokes apart.

Flights: Flights are determined by the total handicaps of the two players. Duration: One day Event.

Prizes: Winners and runners-up in each flight will receive prizes certificates. (In the event of ties, see Event Rules and Regulations – Section 7, Ties)

Trophy: A trophy will be awarded to the two players with the lowest net score against the entire field. In the event of a tie, a sudden death play off would start at the first hole.

2. TWO-MAN BETTER BALL/SCOTCH

Pairings:  Select your own partner or the committee will pair you with another single applicant. Team indexes cannot be more than 10 strokes apart.

Flights:  Flight ranking will be by the total handicap of the team.

Duration: A two day Event. A team must play both days to receive credit.

Prizes:  Gift certificates will be awarded to the teams in each flight with the lowest net scores.  In the event of a tie, a match of cards will determine the winner. USGA rules apply.

Trophy:  A trophy will be awarded to the team with the lowest net score. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by a sudden death playoff starting at the first hole using the day one format.

Scoring:

First day: Score better low-net ball of partners.

Second day:   CHAPMAN SYSTEM. Each player hits their tee shot, each player then hits partner’s ball, then select one ball and alternate shots into cup. Record gross score.  Handicap will be deducted from the gross score.

3. INDIVIDUAL 36 HOLE STROKE PLAY

Definition: An event in which each individual player plays against the field in his flight. The competitor who plays the stipulated round or rounds in the fewest strokes is the winner.

When open to entire Association, play 15.1+ from set of tees forward of 15.0-, except for par three holes. Handicap: 100%

Pairings: Individual play. Foursomes will be made up by committee. Flights: Players will be placed in flights based on handicaps.

Duration: A two day event will be played depending upon the availability of courses on two consecutive days.

Prizes: Gift certificates will be awarded to individual winners in each flight who have posted the lowest 36 hole scores (gross and net). Only one prize may be won by a player.

Trophy: Trophies will be awarded to the low gross winner and the low net winner playing against the total field. Ties will be broken by sudden death play off starting at the first hole

4. INDIVIDUAL MATCH PLAY

Definition: This is a single elimination event. The game is played by holes. A hole is won by the competitor who holes his ball in the fewer strokes.

Handicap: None

Pairings: All flights will have eight players each. All matches will be scratch play. Players in each flight will be matched as per USGA format. Players in the championship flight will play one tee position back from the rest of the field.

Duration: This is a 3 day event. All matches are 18 holes.

Day 1: Individual Match Play winners move to next round. Losers will play a Low Net Consolation game.

Day 2: Individual Match Play winners move to flight finals. Match play losers are done. Day 1 losers play a low net (90% Hcap) Consolation game split into 2 flights. Consolation players are done after day 2.

Day 3: Individual Match Play Flight Finals.

Prizes: A gift certificate will be awarded to the Individual Match Play winner and runner-up in each flight. Gift certificates will also be awarded to Consolation Game 1st and 2nd place winners in each flight.

Trophy: A trophy will be awarded to the winner of the Championship flight. Plaques will be given to the winners of the other flights. All ties will be broken in sudden death play off starting at the first hole. Last year’s champion will be guaranteed to play in the Championship Flight if he so desires.

Remarks: Savannah senior golfers who win their matches are expected to continue play in the event. Players who lose in he first day are expected to play in the day two consolation event.

5. ONE AND TWO BEST BALL OF FOUR

Definition: A one or two day event in which the 18 hole net score is based upon the one best net score or the two best net scores made on each hole during each round.

Handicap: One best of four – 80% Two best of four – 90%. Pairings: Individual play. Foursomes will be made up by the event committee.

Duration: A two day event will be played on two consecutive days.

Prizes: Gift certificates will be awarded to the teams of Savannah senior golfers who have posted the lowest one or two day 18 hole score, In the event of ties, see Tournament Rules and Regulations – Section 7, Ties.

6. STABLEFORD

Definition: A form of stroke play in which the NET score on each hole is converted by a player to a predetermined point system for a Bogie, Par, Birdie, Eagle, or Double Eagle.

Double bogie or over receives no points. Handicap: 100% – For Individual Events & 4 man Stableford.  90% – For Better Ball Team Events.

Pairings: Can be played as an individual event or a two or four man team event. Select you own partner for two man team event. The team partners’ handicaps must be no more than 10 strokes apart. The event committee will make pairings based on handicaps.

Flights: Players will be placed in flights based on handicaps in individual and two man events only; four man events, play versus the field. Two man teams will be flighted based on total handicap. Duration: One day event. ALL POINTS ARE DETERMINED FROM NET SCORES. NET SCORE ON HOLE POINTS:

Double Bogie or worse 0, Bogie 1, Par 2,  Birdie 3, Eagle 4, Double Eagle 5.

Prizes: The individuals or teams of Savannah senior golfers scoring the highest number of points will receive gift certificates. In the event of ties, see Tournament Rules and Regulations – Section 7, Ties.

A trophy will be awarded to the winner of the super seniorevent.

Prizes: Gift certificates will be awarded to winners in each flight who score best against PAR. In the event of ties, see Tournament Rules and Regulations – Section 7, Ties.

Definition: An event in which a 2-man team matches their better ball net against their flight. Handicap: 90%. Pairings: Choose your own partner.

Flights: Teams will be flighted based on the total handicaps of each team. Duration: One day event.

Prizes: Gift certificates will be awarded to the low net teams in each flight.

NOTE: In the event that a two-man team has a handicap difference exceeding 10 strokes, the higher handicap will be reduced until there is a 10 stroke difference.

10. 3 – 2 – 1

Definition: An event in which the 18 hole score is based upon the sum of the net scores on each hole. The par 3’s use the best (3) net scores on the hole, the par 4’s use the best (2) net scores on the hole, and the par 5’s use the best (1) net score. Handicap: 90%

Pairings: Foursomes will be made by the event committee. Can be flighted or field event.

Duration: Normally a one day event. Can be a two day event depending on the availability of course.

Prizes: Gift certificates will be awarded to the winners who have the lowest 18 hole score. In the event of ties, see Tournament Rules and Regulations – Section 7, Ties.

11. 1 – 2 – 3

Definition: An event in which the 18 hole score is based upon the sum of the net scores on each hole. On par 3’s use the best (1) net score, par 4’s the best (2) net scores, and the par 5’s the best (3) net scores. Handicap: 90%.

Pairings: Foursomes will be made by the event committee. Can be flighted or field event. Duration: Normally a one day event.
