Coastal Georgia Seniors Facing Meals on Wheels Cutbacks – You CAN Help!
Many Coastal Empire Seniors benefit from the Meals on Wheels program.
Congress is reducing funding for Meals on Wheels as part of sequestration cuts. Almost $80,000 has been cut from SCI’s local Meals on Wheels program – a devastating loss of over 14% of federal and state funding in the past year.
This is affecting our Coastal Georgia seniors daily.
Currently Senior Citizens Incorporated prepares and delivers more than 3,500 home-delivered meals to Coastal Georgia Seniors and an additional 700 meals to congregate sites each week in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, Liberty and McIntosh Counties.
Nearly 600 people are on the Senior Citizens Incorporated waiting list to receive meals. Sequestration cuts will mean that more seniors in our community will become food insecure and those on the waiting list will not start receiving meals.
Besides bringing nutrition and a caring visitor to home bound seniors, Meals on Wheels saves Coastal Georgia taxpayers money by keeping seniors in their homes, avoiding far more costly alternatives such as hospitals or nursing homes.
Help Coastal Empire Seniors get the message to Congress that Meals on Wheels funds should not be cut. Join the Senior Citizens Incorporated Paper Plate Campaign for Coastal Empire seniors by mailing a paper plate to your government representatives listed here.
Write your message on one side of the plate, and your return address and representative’s address on the other, and add a 46 cent stamp. Or send a regular letter or email using the addresses below:
