Savannah Senior Activity – Johanna Fuguet Hopkinson Exhibit at the JEA

Viewing beautiful paintings and artwork at Coastal Empire art museums and galleries is a major Savannah Senior activity enjoyed by thousands.

Often, we have the opportunity to enjoy traveling exhibits of well known pieces.

The Jewish Educational Alliance will have an exhibit June 1 – June 30th that will be of particular interest to Savannah seniors as most of the painter’s art work is in private hands and not generally available for public viewing.

Johanna Fuguet Hopkinson is a painter and mixed media artist who resides and works in Savannah, Georgia. She has shown (and sold) her work internationally, but Savannah is now her home.

Johanna’s parents were marine scientists, which allowed her to grow up in the uniquely isolated marshes and waterways of Georgia’s Sapelo Island, Aeska Island of Sweden, and Falmouth, Massachusetts. What a fascinating and idyllic sounding childhood!

Having lived for so long in these remote places, there is naturally a strong element of plant and animal life in her artwork. Johanna draws inspiration from the beauty of the world around her. She loves to simplify images into shapes and lines and revel in the brilliant colors therein.

Lately, her paintings have begun to focus on native birds, especially waterfowl. “Unlike most animals in nature, birds generally mate for life and raise their young together. That seems very impressive to me,” states Johanna.

Johanna received her bachelor of Arts degrees from Bard College in both Religion and Studio Arts. She then went on to receive her Master of Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Painting. Johanna has shown work in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; Lacoste, France; Woods Hole, MA; Tivoli, NY; Chapel Hill, NC; Tampa, FL; and Savannah, GA.

The majority of her pieces have been sold into private collections.
