It is Time to Pass Down Our Secret Recipes

On today’s Savannah Senior News, we look at a generational holiday issue – when is it time to share our secret recipes?

It is no secret to you that Coastal Georgia seniors are some of the world’s best cooks. After all, how many people have openly wept when trying your peach pie for the first time? It is Thanksgiving again. Each year Thanksgiving has many Coastal Georgia seniors asking if this is the year to share our most secret family recipes.

Somehow over the years recipes can become very personal, part of what identifies us to the outside world. How many Coastal Georgia seniors are known for their signature cake, cobbler, pie, casserole, or sweet potato recipe? The issue is even more complex when we consider that often we weren’t the originator of the recipe in the first place (though some of us have perfected them!). No, often the recipe we’re guarding was past down to us by our own grandmother or favorite great aunt.

At a certain age, we need to reflect on why we’re keeping the recipe secret.

• Is it just for fun? Sometimes it can just be nice to have a special skill or gift that others in the family do not. If you’re just keeping a recipe to yourself for fun, it probably isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you have several copies around to share when the time is right.
• Are you keeping the recipe to yourself out of spite? Hey, not every family is perfect. Actually, none of them are. Maybe your daughter in law is not the person you would have chosen or your grandchildren have no appreciation for the hard work it takes to make something special from scratch. Chances are though, if you have these feelings they are coming out in other ways as well. Keep in mind though that if your daughter-in-law (or whoever) doesn’t have your best recipes it is really your son and grandchildren who are suffering!
• Are you reluctant to pass on the recipe because it is one of the too few real links to your own favorite grandmother or other family member? That is easy to understand, but remember – now you are someone’s favorite grandparent, aunt, or family member (yes Coastl Empire Seniors knows Coastal Georgia men have some of the best recipes). Passing on that special recipe will one day be a link to you that person holds special each and every time they make the dish. Why delay that kind of special connection?

For some Coastal Georgia senior cooks, a wonderful activity is teaming up with a child or grandchild to turn their best recipes into a self published book that can be passed on to all members of the family. This is one gift you know will be treasured for years to come.
