Brown Bag for the Elderly Helps Coastal Georgia Senior Citizens

For Coastal Georgia Seniors, this has been a long recession. For both those of us still working and those on fixed incomes, budgets have been incredibly tight for a long time.

Coastal Empire Seniors will be detailing some programs that provide assistance to Coastal Georgia senior citizens in need. Today’s spotlight is on the Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia Brown Bag Program.

The Brown Bag Program provides food assistance for low income Coastal Georgia Seniors.

The Brown Bag Program has been providing groceries to low-income seniors since 1984.

The basics of the program are simple – the Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia Volunteers fill large bags with food for Coastal Empire senior citizens.

The bags containing enough food to make approximately 5 meals are packed by volunteers and distributed to more than 1,700 seniors during the third week of the month.

This is when  many Coastal Georgia senior citizens on fixed incomes are faced with difficult decisions about whether to purchase food or medications.

All types of food are included in the Brown Bag for the Elderly packages: canned goods, fresh bread, pastries and produce when available.

Second Harvest serves 21 counties in the Coastal area.

More than 10,605 Coastal Georgia senior citizens are living below the poverty level and need food assistance.
