Our theme today is going to be about spending time together and enjoying each other’s company. You’ve probably exchanged some meaningful and wonderful gifts over the years. Jewelry. Flowers. Candy. This Valentine’s Day, we want to help our Coastal Georgia Seniors create a Valentine’s Day memory.

Weather permitting, exploring some of  Savannah’s historic squares and districts can provide fun, romance, a few surprises, and can often take us back to what it was like to date in our younger days. Did we understand how good we had it?

Probably not. As George Bernard Shaw once said, “Youth is wasted on the young”.

For a particularly laid back Coastal Georgia Seniors Valentine’s Day, start with Chippewa Square in the heart of Savannah’s historical district.  Familiar benches line the brick-paved path through the park, providing a shady respite beneath trees draped in Spanish moss.  Why does everything look so familiar? Chippewa Square – and these benches – were the backdrops for the “waiting for the bus” scenes in Forrest Gump. In the opening shot of Forrest Gump, a solitary feather floats high above the mature oaks, then sweeps down past Savannah’s Independent Presbyterian Church and makes its way toward Chippewa Square, eventually coming to rest at the base of a park bench in the beautiful historic square. Tom Hanks, who plays the role of Forrest, sits on this park bench for most of the movie telling his life story to anyone who will listen. People come from all over the country to see this idyllic setting – and it is right here Savannah seniors, practically  in our backyard.

Okay, are you starting to feel the romance? This is shaping up to be a Savannah Valentine’s Day for our Coastal Georgia seniors to remember.

Why don’t we hit Savannah’s historic River Street next? Paved entirely in cobblestone, River Street provides a picture postcard path for Savannah seniors on their Valentine’s Day date to enjoy a taste of Savannah’s celebrated historical architecture.  Let your familiarity with Savannah fall away and enjoy the music, art, and entertainment provided by the River Street musicians and performers. Take in the delicious scents wafting your way from pubs and bistros as you stroll hand-in-hand beneath the mossy oak trees adorning this riverside treat. If it is warm, pick up something from one of the bistros to enjoy al fresco while you watch the River Street performers. If it’s cool, duck inside and enjoy your meal in the warmth of one of these wonderful Savannah restaurants.

Let’s walk off that nice Valentine’s Day lunch somewhere special…

How about Oglethorpe Square, the “Central Park” of Savannah.  For our picturesque Coastal Georgia Seniors Valentine’s Day date, Oglethorpe Square will provide a picturesque scene complete with afternoon of merriment. Peruse an Oglethorpe Square fresh-air market and pick out a memento of your Valentine’s Day together or just settle into a comfortable nook to enjoy live local music over a cup of coffee.

It’s been a long day, but a good one. You’ve spent your whole Savannah Valentine’s Day together. Just enjoying each other – and our great city.
