Coastal Empire Seniors Exhibit – Restoring the St. Simon’s Island Gullah Geechee Schoolhouse

African History in Georgia

The Harrington Schoolhouse on St. Simons Island

Educational Travel is a big focus for Coastal Empire Seniors.  Gullah Geechee School House Coastal Empire Senior Travel

Many Coastal Georgia senior travelers are looking for day or overnight trips that focus on a particular area of our history.

The Jeckyll Island Museum supports efforts to restore the Harrington Schoolhouse on St. Simon Island.

Built in the 1920s as the main educational structure for African Americans on St. Simons Island, the Harrington Schoolhouse hosted grades 1-7 until desegregation occurred in the 1960s.

The goal is to make the Harrington Schoolhouse a focal point of a 13-acre community park.  It will serve as a focal point where the story can be told of the Gullah Geechee community from Emancipation through the Civil Rights era.Where: Jekyll Island Museum Auditorium
