Over the past two hundred years (dating back to 1813), the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Celebration has grown exponentially to become the second largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the United States.

As you would imagine, Coastal Empire Seniors flock to Savannah in droves to participate in celebrations that range from the Irish Heritage Dance at the Alee Temple to a St. Patrick’s Mass at the St. John the Baptist Cathedral to Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration has become one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the nation – some publications declare it the 2nd largest, others the 3rd.

With two weeks of activities leading up to the finale, our Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade, that should be no surprise to Coastal Empire Seniors.

St. Patrick’s On the River Festival

Savannah’s River Street is no stranger to celebration, and the River Street merchants step things up significantly for Savannah’s St. Patrick’s weekend festival.

St. Patrick’s On the River Festival has become Savannah’s  biggest community celebration of the year. This Savannah Irish heritage festival has drawn national attention and big crowds of Coastal Georgia seniors add to the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day mix.

If you are a Coastal Empire senior citizen considering a weekend trip to attend the  St. Patrick’s On the River Festival, what should you expect?

• Multiple stages of non-stop live entertainment – everything from pipe and drums to Irish dancers to contemporary cover bands.
• Carnival style games
• Plenty of opportunities to indulge in everything from fine dining to street food with lots of cold beverages (yes, many of them green!)

Savannah Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

Crowds for the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade can swell to a MILLION spectators, with over 300,000 tourists from all over the world coming into Savannah for the annual Coastal Georgia Saint Patrick’s celebration.

The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade is held in Savannah’s National Landmark Historic District.

The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade will begin at the corner of Abercorn and Gwinnett St.  and will end hours later at the corner of Bull and Harris Street.

Coastal Georgia Seniors attending the Savannah Saint Patrick’s Day Parade are in for quite a show.

•  350 floats
• Marching units featuring representatives from various local Irish groups
• Irish pipe bands
• Local and regional celebrities
• Coastal Georgia based military units

There will be the usual green beer, and plenty of it, but some Coastal Georgia senior citizens defer in favor of dishes featuring “green grits”.

Of course, some Georgia seniors enjoy both!

The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a very old Irish heritage celebration dating back to 1813.

In it’s early days, the Savannah St. Patrick’s parade was more military in it’s nature, and even today the US military is still highly respected during the two weeks of festivities and certainly during the parade.

The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah parade has been ongoing for nearly 200 years, interrupted only by The War Between the States and World War I.
